NAKED CITY

Artist Statement
In Los Angeles, painting is my favorite way to spend my free time. Oil on canvas is my definitive choice of medium. Oil is most satisfying because the richness of the pigment and the lengthy drying time allows me to push and manipulate the paint around the canvas. I enjoy applying thick, heavy layers of paint to create lots of texture. I appreciate how a rugged, exaggerated thickness of paint can enhance the mood and beauty of an image, giving it energy and a life of its own. I usually use a palette knife and my fingers more than a brush. For me, this is a more physical approach to my subject - I can interact with it, pour energy into it and try to give it life.

My goal is to construct and build my images to exude a feeling, rather than using a brush to portray subjects "realistically".

No one theme or subject dominates my paintings - therefore I often change my emphasis from multiple subjects to the lone figure - and back again. In addition to being an artist, I am a fitness expert. As a result, I am particularly intrigued by women, their perceptions of themselves, and their body images.

When trying to portray the essence of cities, I am interested in the fixed solidity and indifference of the buildings juxtaposed with the color and motion of lights and people going their business.

My deepest satisfaction occurs when I am able to make my paintings resonate with energy and color!
